Importance of cleaning

Optimum and effective cleaning of all operating and milking systems often presents many farms with major challenges and additional work. However, cleaning and disinfecting the systems is essential, particularly with regard to product quality and animal health. In terms of animal health, improper treatment of milking systems can have a major impact on udder health, willingness to perform and animal welfare. To ensure a safe end product and minimise the risk of infection, two challenges must be taken into account: 1) All surfaces that come into contact with milk must be clean and germ-free. 2. no residues must get into the milk during cleaning and disinfection.

In general, the cleaning and disinfection of milking systems has four basic objectives:

1. production of marketable foodstuffs
 2. improvement of udder health
 3. reduction of pathogenic operating pressure
 4. maintenance of system performance


Types of pollution

Contamination in the milk-carrying pipes and collection containers can be very diverse. The natural composition of the milk and its residues provide ideal conditions for various deposits and contaminants. The following types of contamination are frequently found in milking systems:

4 factors for successful cleaning

The many different types of deposits and soiling in milking systems and milk tanks require an optimised and coordinated approach to cleaning and disinfection. Four key factors have an impact on the result:
1. mechanics: Turbulence and the spray pressure of the cleaning solution ensure mechanical cleaning. Sufficient spray pressure and strong turbulence loosen even heavily adhering dirt and allow the cleaning agent to penetrate deep into the dirt layer.
2. temperature: Hot water dissolves grease and increases the reactivity of the cleaning agent by a factor of 1.5 - 2 per 10 °C. The water temperature must not fall below 40°C during the main wash phase, otherwise the dirt may build up again.
3. time: A sufficient contact time of the cleaning solution ensures that adhering soiling can soak and swell.
4. cleaning agents: There is a wide range of different products on the market for cleaning and disinfecting operating systems. Depending on their composition, the products pursue different objectives. The following section takes a closer look at the different modes of action of cleaning and disinfection products.

The correct cleaning procedure

In addition to the four essential factors, the correct cleaning procedure also plays an important role. This can be divided into three sections:

1. pre-rinse: rinse milk residues from the pipes with lukewarm water (37-40°C). Fats are melted at this temperature. The water-soluble milk sugar is dissolved and completely removed. The temperature of the pre-rinse should never exceed 40°C to prevent the milk proteins from burning in.
2. main rinse: Cleaning temperature between 50-85°C with the cleaning solution. Return temperature at least 40°C to prevent new deposits.
3. rinsing: Rinsing with cold, clear water of drinking water quality. Residues of the cleaning solution are rinsed out of the system - depending on the type of system, the water from the final rinse can be used for the next pre-cleaning.

Targeted use of cleaning agents

The cleaning agents and disinfectants used can be fundamentally divided into alkaline and acidic products. Alkaline products have the task of removing organic deposits. The alkaline solutions contained have the ability to break down protein compounds and thus ensure a loss of structure and function of the proteins. This effectively reduces milk proteins. However, bacteria are also impaired in their function. If the products contain chlorine-splitting substances (such as sodium hypochlorite), a disinfectant effect can even be achieved.
Acidic cleaning agents usually contain a combination of different acids. This primarily removes mineral deposits and milk stone. In general, the "harder" the cleaning water used, the more often an acidic cleaning agent must be used.
